  • Electronic Arts and DICE today launched a new service Battlefield 4 Premium, exclusive membership guaranteeing fans a fun and new content to Battlefield 4 during the whole year from the date of the game. Battlefield 4 Premium Members receive a total of five expansion packs so two weeks earlier approach over the other, and each week will be rewarded with another unique content.

  • The new game mode, called “Obliteration”, where teams compete to destroy each other’s objectives.
  • During DICE’s demo of Battlefield 4 on stage at GamesCom, they revealed some new beta details as well. The multiplayer beta, which will be available to those who pre-ordered the game and those who own Premium on BF3, will take place in the first two weeks of October. The Battlefield 4 beta will be available worldwide on all platforms — with the exception of PS4/Xbox One, which won’t even be released at the time of the beta test.

    The Battlefield 4 beta will last for two weeks, and will include the Siege of Shnaghai map, with conquest being the only game mode available. Additionally, DICE is calling this an “open beta”, which means that those who pre-ordered and Premium members will likely get a day or two head start on the beta, before the masses (everyone else) gets access. Just as it was the case with BF3 in 2011.

  • A closer look at the Paracel Storm map, with overview

    DICE revealed yesterday a brand new Battlefield 4 map called Paracel Storm. The new map is set on a series of small islands, with a ton of air and sea vehicles, and dynamic weather effects as well. The map starts out in sunny conditions, and later changes when a tropical storm washes over it. That’s just one of the many cool features in Paracel Storm.
    While the trailer and screenshots of the map showed its great visuals, we didn’t really get a closer look at the layout of the map. We do now, with an overview of Paracel Storm that reveals the 5 capture points scattered over 5 islands, some small, some larger. In addition, both teams have uncapped bases as well. The Chinese (or Russian) forces start on the island, while the US faction starts on an aircraft carrier, much like in Wake Island.
    The flags also appear to be relatively close together, while the outside area is vast. Much like Caspian Border and many other BF3 maps.

    Gamescom: Battlefield 4's Graphics Lacking on PS4

    With the arrival of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, EA and DICE have promised to bring the Battlefield PC experience to consoles, including massive scale maps, 64 player matches, and 60 frames-per-second gameplay. But up until now, all of the demos we've seen of Battlefield 4 have been running on supercharged PCs, producing jaw-dropping, unsurprisingly gorgeous results. This week at Gamescom, however, I had an opportunity to play Battlefield 4 on a PlayStation 4 development system, and the resulting experience has me worried.

    In spite of EA and DICE's emphasis on narrowing the gap between consoles and PC, this week's PS4 demo did not include a full 64-player match or the franchise's beloved vehicular combat. Instead, attendees were treated to a local 16-player match of Domination mode, which limited the play area to a small segment of the game's freshly minted Paracel Storm map. While certainly a demonstration of how the game can be scaled down to satisfy players' need for object-based infantry combat, it's hardly living up to the promise of the "true" Battlefield experience's arrival on consoles.
    But what's more concerning is how the game looks.
    From the moment I sat down, I was surprisingly underwhelmed by the visuals. Instead of the crisp, detailed textures I've encountered this week on the PC version or other next-gen shooter titles, Battlefield 4 on PS4 looked soft and muddled. Wall textures looked half-finished, lacking some of the smaller material nuances or 3D variation. Environmental destruction was more extensive than Battlefield 3 and explosions would send larger chunks of buildings into the air, but once again, the particles looked dull. Weapon models looked great at the hip, but as soon as I raised them to look down the iron sights or scopes, imperfections became apparent.

    Another contributing factor was resolution. While EA and DICE have not confirmed what resolution the game will run at on next-gen consoles, for the purposes of this demo, it was running at a resolution higher than 720p, but not 1080p. Though the difference between the two formats may not be recognizable to more casual players, after spending the week checking out games running natively at 1080p, it was readily apparent to me.
    As uninspiring as my demo was visually, it's also important to remember that we are still months away from Battlefield 4's release. It's clearly a work in progress. And most importantly, the game itself is still very much a blast to play. But if today's demonstration is any indication, DICE's commitment to supporting 64-player games and maintaining a solid 60 FPS on next-gen consoles could very well come at the cost of visual fidelity, and as a franchise renowned for its state-of-the-art graphics, it's an unexpected compromise.
  • DICE will be releasing a Battlefield 4 DLC called Second Assault some time next year (the first DLC to be released is China Rising). Second Assault will include four new map remakes from fan favorites found in BF3.
    According to the new Levolution trailer, it shows brief glimpses of those four maps, which are:
    Operation Metro
    Gulf of Oman
    Operation Firestorm
    Caspian Border
    We’ve previously seen evidence of Operation Metro on Battlefield 4. This was one of the most popular maps in BF3, but also one of the most notorious ones. Caspian Border and Operation Firestorm were popular with players, featuring a good mix of vehicle and infantry combat. Gulf of Oman was a remake from the BF2 map, but wasn’t as popular as other BF2 remakes, such as Strike at Karkand.
    With Frostbite 3, Levolution, and all the other Battlefield 4 features, we’re sure the map remakes will offer plenty of fresh ideas.

  • So I just watched the whole hour and a half BF4 Showdown. First time I heard of the Kinect features in this game. If you are behind cover, you lean to the side and your player will lean. When driving or flying, if you turn your head your view will look in the sMe direction in game.

  • The more I play BF4 the more I keep noticing things that are messed up. Sound doesn't start right away when a match starts. Iron sights on guns are effed for the first minute of a match (iron sight is a solid block that you can't see through). A lot of the textures are blah at the start. All loading issues for the first minute or so of the game. Not the magnitude of problems that PC version is seeing, but still sucks. I hope XBO version is perfect out of the gate.

    I really love how smartphones are used tho. Last night I selected a server and launched a game from my phone. It switched immediately, as if I had done it from my console. Load out changes are instant. Less than 2 seconds after I save a load out on my phone I get a popup in game saying that the load out has been changed. Really sweet.
